Abbott Partners with Google on Diabetes Care

Abbott and Google announced a multiyear partnership to combine glucose data from Abbott’s Lingo sensor with Google’s artificial intelligence coaching. The partnership aims to make metabolic insights from Abbott’s device easier to use, helping people proactively manage their health.

The Lingo sensor provides readings for adults not taking insulin to help them understand how factors such as diet and exercise affect blood sugar levels.

Abbott plans to roll out Lingo integrations with the Google Health app later this year.

The Google Health app is built on its 2021 acquisition of Fitbit for $2.1 billion. Abbott and Google said their partnership is intended to help people take more informed actions to slow the progression of metabolic health conditions.

Abbott will connect its glucose insights into Google Health to help people understand their body’s response to daily habits. For people who have a Google Health premium subscription, Google’s AI-powered health coach will use this data to provide recommendations to help people build healthier habits.

The companies said they plan to conduct a large, real-world metabolic health study integrating continuous glucose, wearable, laboratory and survey data to understand the connections between activity, sleep, well-being and metabolic health. This study could inform more personalized guidance and help them improve their products.

Abbott did not disclose how many people they plan to enroll in the study. In the field of diabetes tech, this partnership is not an isolated incident – other companies, like Dexcom, are also exploring digital health partnerships and the use of AI.

The collaboration between Abbott and Google comes as the use of AI in healthcare is becoming increasingly prevalent.

The National Institutes of Health provides information on diabetes research and the importance of managing metabolic health.

Abbott and Google’s partnership has the potential to make a significant impact on the way people manage their metabolic health. By combining glucose data with AI coaching, individuals can receive personalized recommendations to help them build healthier habits.

It will be important to see how their efforts contribute.
